At some point the day hit a real low...and I think, this was it... The First Lady of Star Trek - Majel Barrett-Roddenberry passed away last night at age 76. Leukemia... The list of actors who have created the original universe that has taught so many of us to think wider and further, to imagine more....grows painfully short these days. And it is especially jarring to lose Majel who continued the vision her husband Gene Roddenberry created and became a power player in her own right. She was also the first woman to receive a leading 'action' and power role, having starred as the original first officer of the Enterprise. Sadly, in 1966 network execs didn't believe it possible to show a woman in such a powerful position and demanded a rewrite - they got that, but they could never get rid of Majel. Being in basically every Star Trek series (and be it as the computer voice ) she enriched this universe I have come to love so much. I truly hope they managed to have her still reprise that voice role for the upcoming film: Star Trek XI. I'll go to the cinema just to hear her. May you rest in peace and may your soul now join your husband where no man (and woman) has gone before. You'll be truly missed.

Thanks...
I think what really puts me down...is for one that all those wonderful people who created the original universe are no longer with us...and one by one is going...(Majel was 76 and she was among the younger ones) and as much as I love the later shows (which I do) - the original will always hold a special place...
That was the first show that actively worked female empowerment, racial and religious tolerance into a tv show. It had the first tv kiss between a white man and an African American woman...
It is now, as we lose one of those pioneers after the other that I really just how big the Franchise's impact on my way of thinking had and has...
That makes it truly sad

True! I remember that quite well although as a child I didn't pay much attention to that when I watched. Only later when I read an article about the subject I realized the grade of tolerance and political value...
My favourite Star Trek movie is the sixth one... (Chris anyone?). It's a perfect parabel on the cold war!
