Lesli Kay Interview – Soap World 23/11/08 (Australia)
Why is Felicia so obsessed with breaking up Eric and Donna?
Number one, I don’t think that Felicia is so parent-driven as people might think – she’s more family-driven. From Felicia’s perspective, we have a lot of family money at stake and the family reputation at stake. Donna’s not good for either one and she has a son on top of everything else, who is another person threatening the family money. And Eric’s making these decisions that are proving Felicia right – like giving Donna the power of attorney, which is just not something that you would do with a new wife whose motives you’re not sure of, and who is so much younger than him. He’s not thinking with his head – the right head anyway! Another thing is that she’s a huge cheerleader for Stephanie. It’s really hard for Felicia to see her father cheat on her mother over and over again. He did it with Beth all those years ago, he did it with Brooke, and then he did it with Donna. It’s not the first time he’s done it, but in Felicia’s opinion, it’s the last. She’s never seen her mother so devastated over it. The whole thing has been very hard on Felicia.
Felicia has become very manipulative over the past few months! Is it interesting to play her that way?
I always say that it’s not interesting to play only good. Who in life is only good? Even the best of people have things that they wish, or that they do, which they question. I personally think that Felicia does things that are underhanded, but they’re always with a purpose and always with a justification. I think that Stephanie also does that brilliantly. Certainly, I’d like to see Felicia to follow in her footsteps and be someone that can do something with such determination that it’s for the right reasons and that people believe it. It’s not the first time I’ve played a scheming character, so I always think that if there’s vulnerability and that the character has real stakes, than none of what they do seems stupid. With Felicia it’s so justified in her love for family and her love for her parents, that she could do just about anything.
We think that Felicia and Owen shared great chemistry in their few scenes together.
Me too!
Would you like to see their connection explored more?
I would love to see Felicia and Owen and the reason being that Felicia always goes for bad boys. Owen didn’t do anything wrong, to be honest. In fact, he’s trying to help her out a little bit. Someone said to me that they should have kept the deal alive off camera, and no one knows about it but them. I don’t think that will happen, but I do hope we see more of Felicia and Owen, as I love working with Brandon.
Will you be making any more guest appearances on Y&R?
I hope so. I’ve heard yes-no, yes-no, yes-no and the “no’s” have been for all the wrong reasons, while the “yes’s” have been for all the right reasons., but I hope it works out, because it was really fun and I had a blast over there.
Do you find it inspiring to work with Susan Flannery?
Oh, god yes! She’s hugely inspiring.
Would you like to see Felicia follow in Stephanie’s footsteps and become a soap matriarch?
I would love it! In all honesty, I think that’s the reason for Felicia living. There’s not another person to be Stephanie Junior – one can’t just come out of the woodwork and have people care about her. I feel so fortunate to be in the position to even be thought about in that manner, because Susan is one of the best people that I’ve ever worked with. I know Susan says she doesn’t want to work forever. Do I believe her? Not really! (laughs). To be honest, I love working with her so much, that day will kill me. It will kill my spirit. However, I’m here 100% for this show, for Susan and for all of it. That’s why when people ask whether I get frustrated over lack of story, or love interests, I say “no” because I work with the best group of people in town.
