I have to ask, just for fun.... We have this tradition in Sweden, and I was just wondering if these news hit the international press, what would people in other countries think? Here is the headline in Swedish press, translated to english: "The Christmas buck in Gävle, Sweden was again put on fire. The Swedish police are hunting the suspects; Santa Claus and the Gingerbread man". I thought it sounded so funny. Knowing nothing about this, what do you think about the headline?

Ops, I have forgotten to say B. This is an annual tradition. They build up a giant buck in Gävle every December, made out of some easy-flamable-material. This is how it looks like: And every year, someone burns it down. Not the same person every year, I think it´s always someone new. They put fire on it and lets it burn. This is how that looks like: And each time, the police has to investigate who did it, but they never catches them. This year it was 2 people dressed up like Santa Claus & Gingerbread man. The Christmas buch has been burned down every year except 9 years ever since 1966. ;D

By the way, it is very illegal to burn it down. So it they catch you, you might get jailtime.
Only one person has been caught. An American tourist named Lawrence Jones who burnt it down in 2001. He was convicted for arson. He didn´t know it was illegal, he just thought it was a tradition (which it is, an illegal tradition).

That is awesome, that would be cool to try to get it done w/o getting caught.

For real, it's a great tradition, I'm so sorry it was a TOURIST who got caught, poor fella didn't even know it was illegal...he was probably like, "Hey! That sounds cool, I gotta get in on that!"

I also think it was too bad he got punished for it.
I don´t think the city of Gävle should complain. They know how much PR they are getting with this tradition!
