KNOTS LANDING alum Kevin Dobson (ex-Mack) is happy to bring order to THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL’s court as the judge presiding over Taylor’s trial.
Soap Opera Weekly: How does the pace of a prime-time soap compare to a daytime one?
Kevin Dobson: It gets a little hectic. It's not so much tense as it's anticipating that everything goes well. You've got to be ready and know your stuff, because unlike film, where you can stop and go, in taped shows you've got to keep going. Especially now; there's no time.
Weekly: How did this come about?
Dobson: My agents called and said, 'THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, you play a judge.' I said, 'Hey, I'm there!’ It would be nice if I were here on a regular basis, because it's what I enjoy doing. I know how it works when you have a nighttime show, and now I know how this works. I'm ready, willing and able to go where I need to be.
Weekly: So would you like to stick around?
Dobson: Yesterday (Sept. 20) was my first day, and from what I understand, I have about 800 shows. That would be nice (laughs)! [It is] seven or eight shows. Once they see me, if they like what I'm doing we'll see where that goes. Once producers understand how an actor can go with the flow and not be thrown by it, they appreciate it. If it goes beyond the judge doing this court stuff, that's fun. There's a basis for the relationship with the Forresters. I recognize their power. They're being as aggressive as they seem to normally be, but now they're in my court and there's a protocol. I have to control them. You can do that meekly and give in to them, or take charge and make it your court. That's what I'm attempting to do.
Weekly: Have you run into the DA across the hall (at THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS), Ted Shackelford (Will; ex-Gary, KNOTS/DALLAS)?
Dobson: I haven't seen him yet. I've been walking the halls waiting for him to pop out. I'll see him sometime. I'm happy for him. He's got a contract situation. I was looking at the cast, saying, 'Who could the judge be involved with?' I made an announcements, 'Does anyone want to have an affair with the judge — male or female?' Me and Thorne.
Weekly: What have you been doing before this?
Dobson: I'm stirring the pot. I've been quiet for a while. I moved out of L.A. for a long time. I became a high school baseball coach and assistant coach at the University of California - Santa Barbara for a while. I knew I'd had such a terrific run that it would slow down for a while. It's out of sight, out of mind in this industry. Now I'm back in L.A. and I feel like I've just started another career. We'll see where this goes.
Weekly: Do you think enough time has passed so that people don't immediately think of KNOTS LANDING?
Dobson: Well, there has been a break, but KNOTS LANDING is on the air every day. So is KOJAK, and the movies are on Lifetime.
Weekly: Had you seen B&B before coming aboard?
Dobson: I saw it once. When I heard about it a few days ago, I decided not to watch, but I needed to see who was who!
